Snow Monastery at the Edge of Sky
India's highest passes lead to one of its quietest faiths. This seven-day trail climbs from Guwahati through Dirang and over the 13,700-foot Sela Pass to Tawang, home to the largest Buddhist monastery in India, before venturing to the still waters of Madhuri Lake and, permits allowing, the Indo-China border at Bumla Pass.
Drive from Guwahati via Bhalukpong to Dirang, settling in for the night.
Cross the dramatic Sela Pass at 13,700 feet and pause at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial before descending into Tawang.
Visit the Tawang Monastery, the largest in India, and spend the afternoon browsing the local market.
Day trip to the serene Madhuri Lake (Shonga-tser), formed by an earthquake and framed by pine forests.
Subject to permit approval, visit the Indo-China border at Bumla Pass, or alternatively the Nuranang waterfall.
Drive back over Sela Pass to Dirang for an overnight stay.
Return drive to Guwahati for your onward journey.
