This seven-day trail climbs from Guwahati through Dirang and over the 13,700-foot Sela Pass to Tawang, home to the largest Buddhist monastery in India, before venturing to the still waters of Madhuri Lake and, permits allowing, the Indo-China border at Bumla Pass.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival — Guwahati to Dirang
Drive from Guwahati via Bhalukpong to Dirang, settling in for the night.
Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass
Cross the dramatic Sela Pass at 13,700 feet and pause at the Jaswant Garh War Memorial before descending into Tawang.
Tawang Monastery & Local Market
Visit the Tawang Monastery, the largest in India, and spend the afternoon browsing the local market.
Madhuri Lake Excursion
Day trip to the serene Madhuri Lake (Shonga-tser), formed by an earthquake and framed by pine forests.
Bumla Pass or Nuranang Falls
Subject to permit approval, visit the Indo-China border at Bumla Pass, or alternatively the Nuranang waterfall.
Return to Dirang
Drive back over Sela Pass to Dirang for an overnight stay.
Departure — Dirang to Guwahati
Return drive to Guwahati for your onward journey.
